Stepping Up When You Need to Step Up
I have the honor to call this guy my cousin. You want to talk about performing in the clutch? Try landing 11 aircrafts in an hour to get 3200+ people safely on the ground. That’s pretty inspiring.
Citation:
Staff Sergeant Daniel V. Monahan distinguished himself by outstanding achievement as Air Traffic Controller, Radar Approach Control, 374th Operations Support Squadron, 374th Operations Group, 374th Airlift Wing, Yokota Air Base, Japan. During this period, Sergeant Monahan swiftly directed the emergency divert and recovery of 11 civil aircraft from Narita International Airport in 53 minutes after the worst-ever earthquake in Japan’s history. Ignoring the earthquake and numerous aftershocks in the following minutes and while under great duress, he accomplished the critical coordination between Tokyo Area Control Center and Narita Approach Control. Initially, Sergeant Monahan dictated airspace entry points ensuring expeditious sequencing. After all the emergency aircraft had landed, he continuously coordinated with both Narita and Haneda International Airports to acquire resumption of flight for 9 airliners to an available civil airport. Sergeant Monahan’s quick reactions after the 9.0 East Japan Great Earthquake safequarded the lives of 3,184 multi-national passengers and 108 crewmembers during the devastating crisis. The distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant Monahan reflect credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.
George Bernard Shaw -
A good journey should change you in little ways; create stronger ties; discover what is lost or missing; and appreciate coming home.
